from the town of Shepparton (Victoria, Australia), spent his teen years
honing his vocal and guitar playing skills in cover bands and solo
acoustic gigs. Although performing other artist's music was somewhat satisfying, there was still something missing for Adam. "I'd finish a gig and think, well another day another dollar but what I'd give to have a room full of people singing my songs." It's this sort of determined thinking that brings 'Tomsy' to his latest offering in his debut, self-titled, full-length album.

When he moved to Melbourne in 2001 to explore broader opportunities, Adam soon teamed up with Aria award winning producer/engineer Doug Roberts who is known for his work with bands and artists such as The Badloves, Chocolate Starfish, Paul Kelly, John Farnham, Mick Jagger, Chris Wilson and Boom Crash Opera. A quick demo was recorded and although a modest offering, Adam felt he had more to give and more to explore in the craft of songwriting. Doug introduced him to Peter Farnan in 2004 to collaborate on some songs for a future album. Peter is best known for his work as the songwriter and guitarist in the 80s and 90s double platinum selling Australian band, Boom Crash Opera.

"I won't forget the first day I spent with Peter. I had never really opened up and collaborated with anyone for a long time so I was a little nervous to say the least". Nerves were soon put aside as the song 'Supernatural' was written on that day and it really set the benchmark for the rest of the album. "I was excited when the day finished. To write and lay down a quick demo of Supernatural in 8 hours confirmed that this partnership would be great" says Adam.

On Tomsy's latest offering a total of 11 songs were recorded with 6 penned by the Toms/Farnan combination. With Doug Roberts back in the engineering and co-producing role along with Peter Farnan and Toms co-producing, the project was destined to be a strong one. "We actually went into Doug's studio back in March 2005 for a week to record the rhythm section for five or six songs. But the band was so productive we ended up laying down nine or ten" says Adam.

The band for the album was Adam on vocals and guitar, Peter Farnan on guitars, back-up vocals and bass on a few tunes along with John Favaro (Badloves) on bass and Tony Floyd (Things of Stone and Wood) on drums.

The next six months was spent laying down vocals, guitar parts and anything else that was necessary, bit by bit. This time taken was due to other commitments at different times from all involved however the duration helped the songs grow to different levels along the way. From the sing-a-long chorus and catchy hooks in 'What A Difference' and 'Time Machine', the sincerity of 'Walking Wounded' or the 'makes you wanna dance pub rock feel' of 'Sugar Lips', the album is jam packed with different grooves and feels but one thing remains constant. That is the vocal tone of Adam Toms. Distinct in its own right; an honest voice with the ability to soar across a huge range if necessary or bring it back down to a low dramatic feel.

His influences vary however a strong appreciation for artists like Ben Harper who have the ability to write an emotional ballad or a groovy blues tune to a heavy rock sound is inspiring to Adam. "I like how at this stage in my career I have that flexibility also. It's something I hope to always have. There isn't one style of music I am drawn to, but I aim to try to write songs that in one way or another will stay in your mind... Or at least come up and grab you when you least expect it."

Now that the album is finished Adam is excited to be out and playing again. His solo acoustic shows are passionate and intimate and with a band behind him an incredible energy is released in the songs. "I love the thrill of being on stage telling stories with my music. Be it a tiny local bar or a huge crowd, as long as feet are tapping and people are smiling, I'm happy."
